GardianT3 SARS-CoV-2 & Influenza A/B

In the past, people may have been dismissive of viruses that cause respiratory infections such as Influenza. Many probably don't realise that this virus alone can cause up to 650,000 respiratory related deaths and millions of hospitalisations worldwide each year.

The soon to be released GardianT3 SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza A/B combo rapid antigen test is a real-time nucleic-acid-based diagnostic tool that detects and differentiates RNA from SARS-CoV-2, Influenza A and Influenza B virus in upper or lower respiratory specimens.

The assay provides a sensitive, single test to diagnose infection caused by the Covid-19 SARS-CoV-2, Influenza A, and/or Influenza B viruses from a mouth or nasal sample from patients who are showing signs of respiratory viral infection, as well as those who are asymptomatic.

Suitable for children, the elderly and disabled

For children, the elderly, people living with a disability, those who are immunocompromised or with low immunity from illness or long-term chronic conditions, respiratory viruses can cause severe symptoms that can be fatal. Even if you aren’t classed as high-risk, serious complications can still arise after a Covid-19 or Flu infection.

While the Covid-19 pandemic persists or evolves to an endemic situation, testing for the virus will remain a vital public health tool. It is important to use a rapid antigen test such as GardianT3 Flu & Covid to identify the type of virus and take appropriate action.

| Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

GardianT3 Flu & Covid FAQ's

The GardianT3 Flu & Covid has been submitted to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). More information will be updated in the near future.

What is the GardianT3 SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Antigen Test?

GardianT3 COVID-19 SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Antigen Test is a saliva based lateral flow immunoassay self test intended to detect SARS-CoV-2 nucelocapsic antigens present in human saliva samples in vitro. This rapid antigen test is intended to be used in symptomatic individuals meeting the case definition for COVID-19 within the first 7 days of symptom onset, and to test individuals suspected of COVID-19 due to contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case or probable cases, and at-risk health workers.

Unlike other rapid antigen tests, GardianT3 can detect Covid-19 from day one, before you are infectious. Positive results are indicative of the presence of SARS-CoV-2. Positive results do not rule out a bacterial infection or co-infection with other viruses. Negative results do not rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection. Individuals who test negative and continue to experience symptoms should seek follow up care from their local state or territory COVID-19 testing centre.

What is the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) Listing Number?

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) listing number is 384538.

Can I use the test on my whole family?

Yes, the GardianT3 saliva rapid antigen test is an easy to use self test suitable for all ages from 4 years old. It is also suitable for those living with a disability.

Can the GardianT3 rapid test detect Omicron?

Yes. The GardianT3 rapid antigen test can detect Omicron Variant (B.1.1.529) and Omicron Variant BA2. Gardian are pleased to announce that based upon new (clinical and analytical) evidence received, the GardianT3 rapid antigen tests can detect the latest Omicron Variants BA 4, BA 5, and BA 2.75, with an ongoing Limit of Detection of 10 TCID50/ml.

It’s taking a long time for the test window to change colour, what have I done wrong?

The instructions state 60 seconds, however this may take less time for individuals who produce more saliva or longer for individuals with a dry mouth. Every individual will produce saliva at different rates.  If you have a dry mouth, it is safe to have a drink or water or use Biotene oral rinse or spray to assist in producing saliva.

When is the best time to do the saliva test?

It is recommended to carry out the GardianT3 rapid antigen test first thing in the morning before you eat, drink or smoke.

Will eating or drinking affect my test result?

It is recommended that you don't eat, drink, or smoke for at least 30 minutes prior to carrying out the rapid antigen test.

How do I use the GardianT3 saliva test?
The GardianT3 rapid antigen test is a simple test to use. Read the instructions for use and use the Gardian Self Check App to assist you with completing the test. To do the test, put the swab in your mouth and keep it there for 60 seconds or for enough time until you the test strip starts to turn pink. Then, take it out of your mouth, put the lid back on and place it on a clean flat surface. Wait for 10 minutes then record the result. The Covid-free digital certificate and test history passport is a great way to store or share your results.
How do I know if I have generated enough saliva for the test to work?

You need to generate enough saliva until the rapid antigen test strip starts to turn pink. In some cases, this can take up to 90 seconds. You have generated enough saliva as soon as the test strip starts to turn pink.

When will my test results be ready?

Test results are ready to be read in 10 minutes. Do not read results after 20 minutes, this will deem the test result invalid.

What happens if I test positive for Covid-19?

A positive Covid-19 test result means it is very likely you have COVID-19. Refer to your relevant health authority for advice on whether a PCR test is required to confirm your rapid antigen test result and follow state or territory guidelines to self isolate and report your results. You can call the national Coronavirus hotline on 1800 020 080, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

What should I do if I get a negative Covid-19 test result but have symptoms?

A negative Covid-19 rapid test result may mean that the viral load is too low to be recognised by the rapid antigen test. If you have symptoms but have produced a negative test result, self isolate and repeat the test in 1 - 2 days. Follow the advice from your relevant health authority.

Can I use the Covid-19 rapid test more than once?

No. The GardianT3 Rapid Antigen Test kit is single use only.

How do I store the test kit?

The rapid antigen test kit should be stored away from direct sunlight, moisture and heat and stored at between 2 – 30 degrees. Make sure the test does not freeze.

I’ve opened the test. Do I need to use it straight away?

Once the rapid antigen test has been removed from the foil pouch, it must be used within the one hour.

Is it ok to carry out the rapid test after the expiry date?

No, always check the expiry date prior to carrying out the rapid antigen test.

The packaging on the test kit is already opened, is it still ok to use?

No, please discard the rapid antigen test. Before carrying out the test please inspect all of the contents and if there are any signs that the packing has been opened or tampered with, do not use it.

Is it ok to suck the absorbent pad (saliva collector) on the test kit?

No, please don’t suck on the saliva collector. Allow saliva to build up in your mouth naturally and push saliva onto the saliva collector.

What do I do if I can’t see the test window?

Please ensure you have placed the rapid antigen test kit the correct way up. Whilst the saliva collector is in your mouth, you should be able to see the test window.

How do I dispose of a used test kit?

Please place the rapid antigen test cassette into the biohazard waste bag provided and make sure the bag is sealed before disposing of it in your household waste.

What is the Limit of Detection (LoD)?

The limit of detection (LOD) is defined as the lowest concentration of an analyte in a sample that can be consistently detected with a stated probability (typically at 95% certainty). The limit of detection of GardianT3 SARS-CoV-2-Antigen Test Kit Saliva Self Test for SARS-COV-2 virus is 10 TCID 50/ML.

Can the rapid test detect different variants of Covid-19?

Yes, please see the 'Clinical Resources' section above for more information.
